DICTIONARY OF KHAZARS – POST-MODERN DECONSTRUCTION OF THE MYTH OF HISTORICAL OBJECTIVITY

Slavica Gadzova

Dictionary of Khazars – post-modern
deconstruction of the myth of historical objectivity

Summary

          This interpretative essay examines the post-modern elements in Milorad Pavic’s novel Dictionary of the Khazars:
- intertextuality;
- absence of casual logic in the story;
- elimination of the classical identification between the character and the reader.
          Also, this essay examines the problem of the comprehension of the history as fiction (fictionalization of the history) in the same novel. Pavic’s thinking is close to Hyden White’s radical comprehension. For both of them, there is no clear border between the history and the ficton. For the history, and for the fiction too, the most important is the story.
